For the first time since 1973, the Gatlinburg Pittman Highlanders advanced to the TSSAA State Basketball Tournament, after they defeated Tellico Plains 63-60 to win the Sectional Championship.
The Highlanders now look to make history after a 53-year absence from the state tournament. Coach Rashid Moore and the team enter their 'Elite 8' matchup against Westview with something to prove—to themselves and the competition.
In addition to their impressive winning streak (13 games), the Highlanders also claimed their first region title since 2000." The Highlanders were led in the sectional championship by senior Jayden Barton who had 28 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals against the Bears.
When asked what made Barton a special player, coach Moore responded that "Jayden's ability to have a big game when it's needed most, and his clutch factor" as being a huge factor. "He's a matchup problem with his size, length and quickness that makes other teams guard him with a smaller, faster guard."
Barton responded about his big game in the Sectional championship, "I just do whatever I can do on the court to help out my teammates and my team win, I have to step up for the team and become a leader for this team." Barton has been the offensive spark plug for the Highlanders with big games against county rival Seymour, as well as against Unicoi in the district championship game.

The Highlanders will face the Westview Chargers, from Martin, TN on Wednesday March 18th, with a 2:15 CST tip-off. Westview defeated Memphis Academy of Science & Engineering 62-44 to advance to their second state tournament appearance as well. The Chargers will come into the game with a 23-7 record, while the Highlanders come into the game at 27-4.
